Sustainability has moved from a marketing topic to a procurement requirement. OEMs are asking manufacturers for carbon data, material compliance, and recycling plans. Manufacturers who respond credibly win tenders; those who cannot will be left out.
Energy Efficiency in Production
Reflow ovens, compressed air, and test equipment consume significant energy. LED lighting, heat recovery, energy-efficient compressors, and scheduling production in full batches reduce consumption per unit. Documenting energy intensity gives buyers the data they increasingly request.
Materials and Compliance
Lead-free solders, RoHS and REACH compliance, and reduced packaging are baseline expectations. FSC-certified packaging, halogen-free boards, and design-for-recycling considerations go further. Verify compliance claims with material declarations, not just marketing language.
- Track and report energy and waste per unit produced
- Document RoHS, REACH, and conflict mineral compliance
- Reduce packaging and use certified sustainable materials
- Offer take-back and recycling programs for end-of-life products
Report Transparently
Third-party audits, sustainability reports, and customer-facing data build trust. Even a small manufacturer can start by publishing its environmental policy, key metrics, and improvement targets. Credibility comes from consistent, verifiable reporting.
