Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Thread, Matter, and BLE each have strengths in power, range, and ecosystem fit. Matter is streamlining cross-ecosystem compatibility, but legacy protocols still dominate installed bases. Match the protocol to the device type and the ecosystems your customers actually use.
Plan Certification and Qualification Early
Ecosystem certification, radio certification, and interoperability testing take weeks or months. Identify the required certifications during architecture review and start applications before hardware is finalized. Late certification requests are a common cause of launch slips.

A device that takes thirty seconds to onboard will lose to one that takes five. Simplify setup, provide clear feedback, and design failure recovery that non-technical users can follow. Integration quality is a differentiator that builds brand trust.
