Electromagnetic compatibility, or EMC, ensures your product neither emits excessive interference nor is disturbed by other devices. EMC testing is legally required for most electronic products in the EU, US, and many other markets. Failing it late in development is expensive; planning for it early is not.
Emissions and Immunity
Emissions testing measures the electromagnetic noise your product radiates and conducts. Immunity testing verifies that your product tolerates external interference such as ESD, surges, and RF fields. Both directions matter for market access and real-world reliability.
Pre-Compliance Testing Saves Time
Pre-compliance testing in an in-house or third-party lab catches problems before the expensive formal test. It is far cheaper to fix a filter layout or shielding gap at prototype stage than to resubmit a full compliance application. Budget for at least one pre-compliance round.
- Design PCB layer stack and grounding for low emissions
- Plan filtering and shielding from the schematic stage
- Include ESD protection on all external ports
- Retest after any significant layout or component change
Plan Certification into the Schedule
EMC certification takes time, and failures require redesign plus retest cycles. Confirm which standards apply to your target markets, reserve lab capacity early, and build a compliance buffer into your launch timeline.
