Developing an IoT device is a cross-disciplinary effort. Hardware, firmware, wireless connectivity, cloud integration, and manufacturing must converge on a single timeline. Following a clear roadmap keeps the project on schedule and within budget.
Define Requirements and Architecture Early
Start with the use case: what data is collected, how often, over what connection, and for how long on battery. These answers drive the choice of MCU, radio (Wi-Fi, BLE, LoRa, NB-IoT), sensor set, and power budget. An architecture review at this stage prevents painful redesigns later.
Prototype Iteratively
Build a proof of concept first, then an engineering prototype, then a design-verified sample. Each stage answers different questions: feasibility, performance, and manufacturability. Certifications such as FCC, CE, and RED should be planned from the prototype phase, not discovered at the end.
- Select radios based on range, power, and regional regulations
- Design for firmware update capability in the field
- Plan certification testing into the schedule
- Design the antenna early and validate it on real enclosures
Manufacturing Readiness
DFM feedback, test fixture development, and firmware flashing procedures should be finalized before volume production. Work with your EMS partner to define functional test coverage and yield targets so that every device leaving the factory is verified.
