LED displays are everywhere, from shopping malls to control rooms. Choosing the right technology requires understanding pixel pitch, brightness, viewing distance, and the operating environment. This guide walks through the key decisions for buyers and integrators.
Pixel Pitch Defines the Right Viewing Distance
Pixel pitch is the distance between the centers of adjacent pixels, measured in millimeters. Smaller pitch means higher resolution and a shorter minimum viewing distance. A P2.5 display suits a lobby or conference room viewed from a few meters, while a P10 display is fine for roadside advertising viewed from far away.
Indoor vs Outdoor Ratings
Outdoor displays must handle rain, UV, temperature swings, and high ambient brightness. They need high brightness (5000 nits and above), waterproof cabinets, and thermal management. Indoor displays can use lower brightness with better color consistency and higher refresh rates.
- Fine pitch (P1.2-P2.5): control rooms, retail, corporate lobbies
- Mid pitch (P3-P6): indoor signage, exhibitions, stage backdrops
- Large pitch (P8-P16): outdoor billboards, stadiums, building facades
Evaluate Total Cost of Ownership
Beyond the panel price, consider energy consumption, spare modules, calibration, and maintenance access. Quality modules with consistent brightness and color allow seamless replacement later. Ask suppliers for module-level uniformity data and warranty terms before purchasing.
