Choosing the Right Connector for Your Electronic Product

Connectors are among the smallest parts in an electronic product and among the most common causes of field failure. A connector that is under-specified for current, vibration, or environment will fail prematurely. Choosing correctly is a design decision with real warranty implications.

Electrical and Mechanical Ratings

Check the connector’s current rating, voltage rating, contact resistance, and mating cycle life against your application. A power connector carrying high current needs proper contact area and locking. A signal connector in a vibrating environment needs robust contact pressure and, often, a locking mechanism.

Environment and Sealing

Indoor, outdoor, wet, dusty, or wash-down environments demand different connector classes. IP-rated circular connectors such as M8 and M12, sealed USB variants, and rugged rectangular connectors each fit specific conditions. Match the sealing to the worst case, not the marketing claim.

  • Verify current rating with margin for temperature derating
  • Choose locking connectors for vibration-prone applications
  • Match IP rating to the actual operating environment
  • Confirm mating counterpart availability for the product life

Test the Whole Mating System

A connector is only as good as its cable and termination. Validate the complete assembly, including crimp quality and strain relief, with pull tests and environmental cycling. Connector failures are rarely the connector alone; they are usually the termination.
